Creekin’ in the Big Darby

The Ohio Environmental Consultants Council held their first annual meeting on June
26, 2006 at Battelle Darby Creek, Galloway, Ohio.  After a short business meeting and
lunch, park naturalist, Tim Taylor led us INTO the Big Darby Creek with buckets and
seines.

We became part of a ‘Stream Quality Monitoring Assessment’.  We waded into the
water and danced the “Big Darby Shuffle” to agitate the river bottom.  After
capturing live organisms, we studied lists and assigned scores according to the types
of animals we caught.  This unique warm water habitat is home to many rare and
endangered species of fish and freshwater mussels. Our score was in the
EXCELLENT range, which indicates the health of the river.  The catch of the day
included darters, damselfly nymphs, water penny larvae, snails, worms and leeches.
After a fascinating (and somewhat squeamish) study, all were released.

Both Big and Little Darby Creeks are dedicated State and National Scenic rivers. Plan
an outing with your garden club to learn more about Big Darby Creek!  For more
