SEEDS OF FRIENDSHIP – 2007 Garden Clubs of Ohio are invited to participate this year again in Seeds of Friendship, a program designed by Partners in Conservation at the Columbus Zoo. The program’s objective is to respectfully assist the courageous people of Rwanda. In 1994, more than 1,000,000 Rwandan men, women and children were killed during the genocide. When survivors began to rebuild their lives they found that vegetable seeds were not available or they simply did not have the money to purchase them. Quality vegetable seeds are still not readily available. The seeds you purchase will be given to Dr. Charlene Jendry from Partners in Conservation. Charlene will take the seeds to Rwanda in June and will personally distribute the seeds to Rwandan families who live in villages near gorilla habitats and to the Imbabazi Orphanage. The seeds will help provide fresh produce for the 115 children who live at the orphanage. All of the children were orphaned when their families were killed during the genocide. VEGETABLE SEEDS: Green Cabbage, Tomatoes, Carrots, Bush Green Beans, Green Peppers, Onions FLOWER SEEDS: Cosmos & Zinnias - all colors Rwandan women like to plant cosmos and zinnias around their vegetable gardens, but they can’t always afford to buy the seeds. Due to cultural preferences and climate conditions, please purchase only the seeds that are listed above. And please purchase seeds packed for use this year. We would not want to send inferior seeds to those depending on us. Many women quietly asked Dr. Jendry if it would be possible for them to have new garden hoes. The hoes can be purchased in local village markets for $5.00. Dr. Jendry offered to take any donations with her to Rwanda in June. She will purchase and distribute the hoes to the ladies. Something as simple as buying seeds or garden hoes will make a tremendous difference to women in Rwanda as they continue rebuilding their lives. Your kindness is sincerely appreciated. PLEASE SEND ANY DONATIONS OF SEEDS OR CHECKS (written to GCO, with Seeds on the memo line) TO MARGIE WILLIAMS, 2851 EXMOOR RD., COLUMBUS, OH 43221. PHONE: 614-488-7755. email:margiegolf@aol.com You may bring donations to the GCO Convention. Deadline for seeds is April 4, 2007. Any questions please call Margie |
